ASEG Research Foundation - How to Apply
Please email the completed application form to:

General
Applications for grants are invited from Institutions around October of each
year. Typically the person responsible to supervise the student submits a two to
three page summary of the project. The application must detail the nature of the
project, degree level, and the nature and amount of the requested as a grant. It
is not necessary when submitting an application for a student to be identified.
However, successful Institutions must submit the student's CV for approval by
the ASEG RF before the grant is paid.
Project selection is made by sub-committee of specialists on the basis of the
project's quality, relevance to either mineral or petroleum exploration and
potential to impact on exploration technology or know-how. In this way we
support quality research projects in exploration geophysics of interest to a
wide cross-section of the mineral and petroleum industry in Australia. The
balance between mineral and petroleum projects supported is roughly in the
proportion to the donations received from the two sectors.
For each project, we appoint a liaison officer, who is a member of ASEG (but not
necessarily of the ASEG RF Committee), and who monitors the progress of the
project and reports to the Committee. On the completion of the project, a copy
of the thesis is forwarded to the ASEG RF. Theses are stored at the Australian
Mineral Foundation Library in Adelaide and are accessible through that Library.
Furthermore, it is a requirement that at the completion of the project an
abstract is published in Preview and any publication as a paper is first
submitted to Exploration Geophysics. The supervisor is normally expected to
co-author the publication and is responsible for its submission.
The project supervisor is also responsible for drawing the grant funds as
required and for managing the expenditure. He or she ensures that a research
report and financial reconciliation is provided to the ASEG RF on completion (or
cessation) of the project. Grant funds must be accounted for and, if not used,
are returned to the ASEG RF.
Guidelines and Eligibility Requirements for Research
Grants
- Funds will be granted in support of research projects at B.Sc.(Hons.), M.Sc. and
Ph.D. level carried out in an Australian Institution.
- Grants will be made to projects rather than people, that is, they will not be
"Scholarships". For B.Sc.(Hons.) and M.Sc. projects, annual grants of up to
$5,000 will be made to the Tertiary body responsible for the project - usually a
University. Additional funds beyond $5,000 could be provided in exceptional
cases, at the discretion of the ASEG Research Foundation.
- Grants of up to $10,000 per annum will be made for Ph.D projects.
- The funds are to be used in support of the project, eg. for travel costs, rental
of equipment, etc. Funds must be accounted for and, if not used, should be
returned to the ASEG Research Foundation.
- The project supervisor will be responsible for drawing the funds as required and
for managing the expenditure. He or she should ensure that a research report and
financial reconciliation is provided to the ASEG Research Foundation on
completion (or cessation) of the project.
- On the completion of the project, all results must be available in the public
domain. Confidential research is therefore inappropriate for the ASEG Research
Foundation.
- Projects will be selected by the relevant ASEG Research Foundation
sub-Committee. They will select projects in applied geophysics with an emphasis
on practical or applied research. Expenditure will be spread approximately
equally between petroleum and minerals exploration research - unless there is a
strong bias in contributions.
- On completion of the project, an abstract will be published in Preview and
publication as a paper must first be submitted to Exploration Geophysics. The
supervisor would normally be expected to be a co-author and will be responsible
for submission of a publication.
- Interim (eg. six monthly) progress reports will be required and should be
forwarded to the Chairman/Secretary of the ASEG Research Foundation.
- For each project, the ASEG Research Foundation will appoint a liaison officer,
who should be a member of ASEG (but not necessarily of the ASEG Research
Foundation Committee), and who will monitor the progress of the project and
report to the Committee. This would involve at least one and preferably more
visits to the Institution where the project is being carried out.
- Three members of the ASEG Research Foundation Committee will be responsible for
checking the final report from each project. Copies of the report (eg. thesis)
will be available to any interested members, on request.
- On the completion of the project, a copy of the thesis must be submitted to the
Chairman of the ASEG Research Foundation. The thesis will be stored at the
Australian Mineral Foundation library in Adelaide.
- It is expected that the student undertaking the project will be a student member
of the ASEG.
